Even AS Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) of Mumbai University (MU) claims to have successfully completed admissions of nearly 71,000 students online this year, the number is likely to come down as officials have found cases of erroneous admissions granted without verification.

The admissions closed on October 12,and officials of IDOL have come across over 300 cases of ineligibility. The officials, however, said the number is likely to rise by the end of November when the verification process is completed.

Speaking on the ineligible cases,an official from IDOL said,“We have come across applications from students who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree and applied for a masters degree in the commerce stream or computer IT. The number of such applications is likely to increase as the eligibility department continues physical verification of documents and applications.”

However,a senior faculty member from commerce said,“Why were the admissions done in the first place when the students filled in wrong streams? The online admission system has many loopholes.”

The problem did not occur due to the online admission process, said D. Harichandan, director of IDOL.

“Students have not paid attention to the instructions on the application forms and have applied for courses they are not eligible for. Such applications will be cancelled and the fees refunded,” he said.
