A supervisor working for the Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) was arrested after the Thane Police found 75 gelatin sticks and 36 detonators in his possession on Monday.
The police said Rajendra Chavan (42) was arrested from an under-construction utility site in Barvi Village in Kalyan (West). Thane Commissioner of Police K P Raghuvanshi confirmed the arrest, but ruled out any terror angle. We have arrested a supervisor for illegal possession of the explosives and detonators. However,it appears to be a case of someone indulging in mischief and there is no terror angle in the case, said Raghuvanshi. Senior police officials said Chavan was arrested for not having requisite permission.
Chavan did not have the necessary permissions to be in possession of the explosives. We will also arrest another person, identified as Arif, who reportedly supplied the explosives, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 3) Hirasingh Jadhav.
KDMC Commissioner R K Sonavane said the contractor had the permission to quarry stone but not to use explosives. We had not given the permission to use explosives. The contractor was clearly told to chisel the stone, said Sonawane.
However,a senior KDMC official said this was a case of political interference.
The site has witnessed a lot of disputes with members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena creating a ruckus here since two weeks. The local councillor may have had a problem with the contractor or there may be a dispute between a political party and the contractor, said the official.
