What’s it about? Running from undercover police with a briefcase full of marijuana,Michael ‘Mike’ Ross stumbles into a room of Harvard graduates, waiting to be interviewed for the post of Harvey Specter’s associate at a law firm. The witty and sarcastic Specter is immediately impressed by Ross’ sharp intelligence, clever responses, photographic memory and extensive knowledge of law. This, despite the fact that the latter has no law degree,Harvard or otherwise, and makes a living taking law exams for other people.

Specter decides to hire Ross anyway, frustrated with the rest of the comparatively-regular candidates. The first episode of the show, consisting of these introductions, premiered in the US in June 2011 and was brought to Indian television earlier this week. The subsequent episodes narrate the various cases that are brought to the men, their relationships with fellow workers at the law firm and with each other.

Who’s in it? Wonder boy Ross is played by Canadian Patrick J Adams, whose most popular role so far has been on this show, but has guest-starred in a number of other television series including Lost,NCIS and Pretty Little Liars. Specter is played by Gabriel Macht, who is also best known for Suits, but has featured in small roles in films such as Behind Enemy Lines and The Recruit. The other main characters on the show are paralegal Rachel Zane played by Meghan Markle,Specter’s executive assistant Donna Paulsen (Sarah Rafferty),managing partner of the firm Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres) and junior partner Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman).

What’s hot? There’s very little the producers have left to chance in this show. Perfect amounts of dry, sarcastic humour coupled with wit, emotions and the rather absorbing cases that the firm works on make Suits a show that is likely to appeal to just about anyone. The seemingly cold and selfish Specter is proved to be otherwise through a series of small incidents, all of which only make the show and its characters that much more interesting. What it has managed to do is strike a fair balance between being a serious show centred around a law firm and its cases, and being overtly dramatic.

What’s not? Too many romantic entanglements might take away from the not-too-dramatic nature of the show. Besides that, however, there’s little fault with the series.

Should you be watching it? Suits is easily one of the best shows on television at the moment.
