Cartoons inspired Akshay Kumar to design stunts for Khatron Ke Khiladi

After the announcement of Khatron Ke Khiladi 4,the crowd grew silent. Soon enough,a car raced into view. Within seconds,it had flipped upside down, with shards of glass all around, and caught fire. Support staff rushed in,trying to douse the flames before unstrapping and pulling out the driver — Akshay Kumar. The act of daredevilry that the actor put up at the launch of the new season was commendable. But it almost fell flat as the time gap between the stunt and his appearance was close to five minutes. By then, the excitement had died down. Nonethless, the actor, who returns as the host of the show on Colors after last season’s stint with Priyanka Chopra, had proved his point — that no one else can do stunts better than him.

Talking about his return to television, the actor explained the recent season’s format. “In this season,I have upped the ante to an unimaginable level.” That’s why they are calling this season,Khatron Ke Khiladi ‘Torchaar’,which is a combination of ‘torture’ and ‘chaar’ since it’s the show’s fourth season. “The show, which premiered on Friday, will be aired on every Friday and Saturday as opposed to the earlier format of being a daily.

Kumar said that the true test of physical and mental fitness can be gauged only when one surprises the contestants. “So,I’ve done away with the creepy crawlies segment. This time, the contestants have to face big wild creatures, such as lions, elephants and alligators. And safety cables have been removed too,so there have been ample tears, injuries and broken bones. But the girls have been courageous enough to see it all through,” he added.

The star, known for performing his own stunts, has always been more than a mere host, leading by example on the show. He confessed about his involvement in designing the show too. “Up to 80 per cent of the stunts are my ideas. More often than not,the inspiration comes from the cartoon shows I watch on television.” Citing an example,he said that the stunt in the show’s promo, where he is seen in lying on a hammock tied under a helicopter’s belly, was inspired from a Tom & Jerry series.

The show,he concluded, also marks his return to action films: Joker,Once Upon A Time In Mumbai 2 and Rowdy Rathore. “Action is the flavour of the month, humour can take a break for a while.”
