A week before the first phase of Census work is due to end,76 per cent of the work has been done in Mumbai, the progress better in some places than in others. The best performance is in Chembur where only 10 per cent work remains; the poorest is in Kurla with 30 per cent to go.

In five wards including Bandra (West),Mulund, and parts of Byculla, besides Chembur, more than 80 per cent of the work is over. Six areas follow with 61-70 per cent complete. Low-performance areas include Dadar East,Byculla West,Andheri East,Goregaon West and Malad West, besides Kurla West.

Enumerators have listed 27,257 house blocks and completed all houses in 16 per cent of them, said Manisha Mhaiskar, additional municipal commissioner. Some 10-15 per cent houses have been found locked, she said.

Service professional Akash Parakh has already missed out; he was shifting when enumerators came. “I am not sure where I go as I have not been counted in the survey wither in my old home or my new one.”

Some had been promised a second visit but Census officials have not yet returned. In Kandivali West’s Vijay Park, housewife Indu Singhvi said she had sent the Census official back the first time. “I did not have all the information then. I am worried they might not come again. Some who were not in when the enumerators came will get a second chance. Adnan Attarwala,24,was out during the first visit; the enumerator asked his neighbour to ask him to be home the next time. “For those who will still miss the Census,we will open helplines and print advertisements on how they can get registered,” said Mhaiskar.

Marriage registration has suffered with most ward officials on Census duty. Registration forms are not being accepted at many wards, including Matunga East in F North,Dadar East (G North),Fort,Churchgate (A Ward) and Chandanwadi (C ward). “I waited more than an hour and had also taken along witnesses but was sent back as no official was free,” said an applicant. An F North ward official suggested people come for marriage registration after June 15.
