Traffic cops undergo performance appraisal

There will be a roster five constables whose performance has been poor.

To keep a check on allegations of corruption and to improve road discipline, the Traffic Police have initiated a unique introspection exercise, where constables will be punished if they hesitate or appear lazy in booking offenders.

With the new mechanism,1,400 constables attached with traffic department will be appraised weekly on their performance, and the number and kinds of road offenses they have registered.

“We started this exercise two months ago and we can see the change in statistics. There has been a rise of at least 33 per cent in the number of cases registered by the traffic department,” said Pratap Dighavkar,DCP (traffic). While the reward of Rs 100 to five constables every week is a token of appreciation, officials said the idea was to ensure that cases registered reflect in the number of official receipts discharged.

Similarly, there will be a roster five constables whose performance has been poor. Constables who have not made a case or do not show receipts will be questioned. “If constables do not have a valid reason, they are given a warning. If the performance does not improve in the second week,he is reprimanded. If the constable has performed poorly for a month,he is fined Rs 50 to Rs 250,” said Dighavkar. “Monitoring constables in this manner will also help minimise corruption,” he added.
