Soon, breaking traffic rules on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) will invite challan, as the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) is set to become operational.
The state transport department will conduct live testing of ITMS on the sea bridge, possibly this week, an official said. Vehicles will be monitored for speeding and driving without seatbelts, among others. ITMS is designed to detect up to 15 different types of traffic violations.
Although the Atal Setu (MTHL) was opened to the public since its launch in January 2024, no challans have been issued yet for traffic violations. Motorists driving on the sea bridge so far receive messages only for insufficient FASTag balance. Once ITMS is fully tested and certified, traffic violators will also start receiving challans.
The sea bridge, the longest in the country at 21.8 km (with 16 km over water), is equipped with cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology with high-quality AI-enabled cameras installed by MMRDA to detect even minor violations.
Additionally, pan-tilt-zoom cameras provide a 360-degree view of vehicles on the bridge, further enhancing traffic monitoring.
The ITMS, which cost Rs 520 crore to install, includes a range of advanced features such as CCTV surveillance, an under-bridge surveillance system, AI-based video analytics, emergency calling boxes, section speed cameras, and vehicle-actuated speed displays. This comprehensive system is expected to significantly improve traffic regulation on the bridge.
Strabag Austria has been tasked with the operations, maintenance, and toll collection for MTHL, according to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
Once ITMS testing is successfully completed, all video footage captured at the control and monitoring centre located at Chirle will be reviewed by Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials.
Since its launch, the Atal Setu has significantly reduced travel time, cutting down at least one hour of travel for commuters from South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai. From January 13 to August 25, 2024, a total of 50,04,350 vehicles have used the bridge, as per the MMRDA.
