A ballistics expert said on Monday that two of the bullets recovered from the body of policeman Tukaram Omble, shot dead at Girgaum Chowpatty on 26/11,had been fired from Pakistani gunman Ajmal Kasabs AK-47.
The declaration by Vasudev Patil, assistant chemical analyser with the Forensic Sciences Laboratory, contradicted Kasabs claim during his partial confession that he had not fired at anyone before being arrested, and that he had only been following orders from his partner Abu Ismail who was leading the way.
Patil told the special court,A total of 72 empty shells recovered from CST and Chowpatty were found to have been fired from Kasabs rifle. Of these eight were fired at Chowpatty and the rest at CST.
This clinching piece of evidence shows that Kasab was an active player in the entire shooting though he denied it in his statement to the court, said special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam.
The forensic expert said only 48 empties seized from target spots had matched the AK-47 rifle that Abu Ismail had been wielding. Though it is arguable that there could be many rounds and empties which the police might not have been able to seize,as of now this goes on to show that Kasab was leading and not a mere follower, said Nikam.
The witness said the bullets that matched Kasabs rifle had been recovered from bodies of the injured and the dead at CST,too. The examination of the witness will continue.
Long way to go
Though Home Minister Jayant Patil said in Kolhapur that the case would be over by September 15,the prosecution has still to produce a substantial amount of evidence. Nikam said,We are trying our best to complete the evidence at the earliest and wont disappoint the public at large keenly waiting for justice to be done. The remaining evidence pertains to attacks on the Hotel Taj,Oberoi and Nariman House and the two taxi blasts, officials said.
