Uganda garment trader held with Cocaine worth more than Rs 11 crore at Mumbai airport

Customs officials at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International airport have arrested a Ugandan national and seized cocaine worth more than Rs 11 crore which he has concealed in his stomach.

The customs officials detained Islam Bukenya, 43, who had come from Entebbe in Uganda, at the Mumbai airport on March 1 using spot profiling method.

Suspecting that he was concealing articles in his stomach, the customs officials secured permission from the court for his medical examination and then admitted him at Sir JJ Hospital.

Between March 2 to 5, Bukenya purged 100 capsules stuffed with 1,187 grams of white colour powder worth more than Rs 11 crore in the illicit market. On testing, the powder was found to be cocaine, said an official.

He was subsequently placed under arrest under relevant sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Bukenya is a small garment businessman from Uganda and studied till Class 12.
During questioning, he revealed that one Ugandan national Hassan as his handler.
Hassan had asked him to smuggle the drugs to India. In India, he would get a call from the person to whom he was supposed to hand over the consignment at a hotel, the customs sources said.

Hassan also promised to pay 15,000 USD to him for the work, customs probe has revealed.

The customs officials are trying to extract more information regarding his module and associates.
