University told Senate members at the meeting on Tuesday that a five-member committee has been set up to frame guidelines.

Mumbai-universityMumbai University teachers could soon face action for talking to the media without permission or for flouting norms such as for attendance or behaviour with students. The University on Tuesday decided to draw up a “code of conduct” for teachers in all departments and affiliated colleges, which will also recommend actions to be taken for violations.

The university told Senate members at the meeting on Tuesday that a five-member committee has been set up to frame guidelines.

The committee is headed by Sanjay Shete, a management council member, V N Magare and S Gadade, both college principals, Vasant Shekade who is the teachers’ representative and Mahadev Jagtap, the students’ representative and a Yuva Sena leader.

The committee is expected to submit its report and recommendation within next two months.

“Once the draft is ready, it will be placed before the appropriate university bodies for their approval. A circular to that effect will then be issued,” said Shete, the convener.

Officials claim the code will prevent the episodes such as the press conference by Neeraj Hatekar.

Hatekar, considered one of the finest professors of Econometrics was suspended last January after openly criticising the university administration at that press conference in December, 2013.
