A variety of cuisines have made their way into Mumbai’s culinary world, but Chinese remains a hot favourite with most. Similar is the case with filmmaker Abhishek Kapoor, who enjoys the Chinese treat at Royal China,Bandra. This time around,we meet for lunch at his favourite restaurant, where two polite Chinese hostesses, dressed in starched uniforms, lead us to our table. Kapoor,a regular here, doesn’t care to go through the menu. “I know what I want,” he promptly says while placing an order for a bowl of Tom Yum Seafood soup,a plate of prawn and chicken dumplings and Kungpao Chicken.

A foodie at heart,Kapoor is currently thrilled about his jaunt with Khatron Ke Khiladi 3,where he is one of the 13 contestants. “I had a little free time in hand,so I decided to take it up,” he confirms. “But I am really looking forward to having a great time in Brazil. And the rest of the guys are really good,” he says. The filmmaker’s association with KKK3 would have us believe that he is an adrenaline junkie. “I don’t know,” he says. “I haven’t ever in my life done any adventure sports or stunts. It is going to be an entirely new experience for me.”

short article insert As we are talking, the food arrives. Over starters,Kapoor tells us that he hasn’t made special preparations for the show. “I just go to the gym regularly. And anyway, this show is not about muscles, but about your gut. And I am ‘Gattu’ (his nickname),” he jests. While most contestants of KKK3 would take part in the show to overcome their fears, this 37-year-old filmmaker hopes to figure out what his fears are during the course of the show. “Unless you stand on the parapet of the 30th floor and try to jump, you won’t know if you are afraid of doing so,” says Kapoor, who is clear about his goals. “I want to win this one.”

After a slow start to his career with his directorial debut Aryan having bombed at the box office,it was his next,Rock On!!,that skyrocketed him to success and made him a part of the Young Filmmakers Inc. Ever since, his audience has expected him to deliver a few more. But Kapoor has taken it slow. “I struggled a lot before Rock On!!. When it did well,I wanted to soak in the feeling,” says the director, who is satiated with the lunch. “I also had a breakfast before this,” he smiles.

Currently,he is done adapting Chetan Bhagat’s 3 Mistakes of My Life into a script for Excel Entertainment. “It is in the casting stages now. We should start shooting by end of this year,” he hopes. Meanwhile,Kapoor has plans to work with other production houses and eventually set up one of his own. “Farhan (Akhtar) and I have a good understanding. He doesn’t mind me working with other producers,” he affirms. A film buff,Kapoor also has plans of making a comedy film. “I don’t remember the last good comedy film I watched. I want to make a good one in that genre,” he says, stressing on the fact that he wants to make it on his terms. “Bollywood lacks good films, and this is because we are so confused about what the audiences want.”
