After much delay, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is finally beginning its ambitious project of Geographic Information System (GIS) enabled maps. It will not only record the citys three lakh properties but also every road, tree, dustbin and manhole in the locality as well as the vital installations.
The civic administration has tabled a proposal with the standing committee for the appointment of NIIT GIS Ltd as system integrator, who will develop the software and implement the system at a cost of Rs 8 crore.
The GIS maps will help the civic body keep an eye on property tax defaulters, water leakages and miscreants, who regularly puncture the citys pipeline, along with developing specific applications for sewerage pipes, disaster management, education, road, garden and other departments.
GIS mapping is part of reforms under the Centres Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission through which BMC has received funds for major infrastructure projects. The civic administration since the last two years had proposed carrying the exercise and accordingly,National Informatics Centre (NIC) was expected to submit the base maps. The base maps will provide a 3D image with low lying photographs being compared to the satellite images and the ground mapping. These maps will be then super-imposed with details of other departments. Once complete, the digital maps will give a draft of the entire city at a click of a mouse and will also be uploaded on the civic portal.
The GIS maps will be prepared using Quick Bird Satellite image with 0.6 metre, which offers the highest resolution on the land and even records small bushes. The final maps are expected to be completed in the next two years.
