A day after corporators raised doubts about discoloured water being fit for consumption, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation reassured its elected representatives that laboratory tests have indeed been conducted on the water, which was then found potable.
The BMC presented a test result of sample of water from the Raoli Hill reservoir. The sample tested at Haffkine Institute for Training,Research & Testing proves that the water is potable water and fit for consumption, said Aseem Gupta,Additional Municipal Commissioner. We have checked water from those reservoirs of areas where yellow water is received and it is clearly potable water. We have found no health hazard in the water, said Gupta.
Corporators had alleged that the yellow water has traces of iron and manganese which might be a health hazard. The civic administration has assured that there will not be any health implications due to the consumption of such water. Nevertheless, more samples have been sent to a laboratory called Geo Chem to find the exact concentration of compounds in the yellow water, said Gupta.
Corporators on Wednesday raised concerns that there might be long term implications of consuming such yellow water. The compounds and chemicals in this yellow water might affect health of Mumbaikars and therefore all the required tests are necessary to ensure their safety, said Bhalchandra Shirsat,BJP corporator and Standing Committee member.
Corporators had demanded a thorough explanation from BMC officials about the reason behind the yellowish tinge in the water. Corporators had also asked BMC on how they could be so sure that the water is safe for human consumption. The BMC had earlier stated that it has been drawing large quantities of water from Upper Vaitarna dam where there is presence of algae and natural vegetation in the water. To treat this water, the amount of chlorine to be put for purification has been increased which oxidizes with water and form Ferric hydroxide which is yellow in colour
