Zero garbage drive an eyewash: Corporators

Interestingly,Shiv Sena corporators too thrashed the inefficiency of the BMC and called the drive an eyewash. BJP corporator Bhalchandra Shirshat said because of a number of problems at the Deonar dumping ground,the garbage collection had badly suffered. “The road inside the dumping ground is so bad and sticky due to overflowing garbage from trucks that the number of trips taken by trucks have come down to one third. Earlier,it used to take half an hour for a dumper to get inside the ground,empty the garbage and go back for collection. Now,it takes almost an hour and a half,” he said.

Congress corporator Rajendra Chaubey and Sena corporator Mangesh Satamkar both pointed out that garbage lies unattended for many hours in their wards. “Nuisance detectors appointed by the BMC are hardly ever seen on the streets. The garbage is piling up throughout the day in my area. Before launching such schemes,does the administration make sure it has the required infrastructure in terms of labour and vehicles?” asked Satamkar.

However,Additional Municipal Commissioner Mohan Adtani said the drive was fairly successful and the BMC has managed to lift 94 per cent of garbage across the city without any delay since October 2.

Chief Engineer (solid waste management) B P Patil said 123 new collection points have been zeroed in on during this drive to pick up garbage more frequently.
