Government officials on Friday announced a resolution to the two-month-long fight between management and union of Cummins India Limited in Pune following which production has resumed at the Kothrud plant.
Most suspended union members of Kirloskar Cummins Employees Union at Cummins India plant in Pune resumed work on Friday after continuous meetings between government officials, management and union members.
Following a strike in September this year, the management had suspended 56 production department workers for untoward incidents in Kothrud. During the strike in September, the workers had not let around 150 diploma trainees to leave the premises and police had to interfere. The 905 workers on strike had demanded that the 56 suspended workers be reinstated before they resume duties. After two months, only 151 of the 905 workers had resumed their duties.
NCP MP Supriya Sule intervened in the matter and asked government officials to call a meeting between Cummins management and workers union members to resolve the tussle. In a meeting held on November 18 with the Labour Minister Hasan Mushrif and Sule,it was agreed that 40 of the 56 workers would be reinstated and inquiries against 16 others would continue.
The inquiry report of 16 persons will be placed before the labour secretary within four months for suggestions. They have not been reinstated while the remaining 40 have resumed work with effect that production work at Kothrud plant commenced on Friday, said Kavita Gupta, secretary (labour). Gupta added that since the strike had been deemed illegal by the Labour Commissioner,Pune, the workers were not entitled to any compensation.
