All-round Benefits

51 employees of city-based company EagleBurgmann India Ltd. travel to work on bicycles.

Popat Chaudhari,a middle-aged,portly gentleman, bicycled gently on the uphill, empty streets of Ramtekdi industrial area in Pune. Mopping his brow as he pulled into a swanky-looking building,he parked his mode of transport neatly in a corner, among a slew of other bicycles. Chaudhari has been bicycling to work every day since the Dussehra, this year.

In an attempt to cultivate eco-friendly as well as healthy habit, the employees of a city-based company in Pune have come together to inculcate the habit of coming to work on bicycles. Over 51 workers at EagleBurgmann India Ltd.,a company that provides industrial sealants, came up with the idea a month ago, realising it would serve twin goals of fitness and conservation.

On Dussehra, over 50 employees volunteered to forgo their vehicles and commute to office on bicycles to save the environment from pollution and conserve petrol. With the support of Suvarnkranti Sahakari Society,an organisation formed by the workers and management,interest-free bicycle loans were distributed to willing employees.

Rajoo Sakure, senior manager, assembly, says,“It was completely a workers’ initiative. The rising fuel prices over the few years have pinched them as well.” Explaining that most of the factory workers were local residents of Hadapsar and nearby areas,Sudhir Methekar, commercial executive, said,”Since most of the workers live in a radius of four to six kilometers,it is really a good idea for them to come on the bicycles,as it has immense health benefits as well,” he said.

While some employees were raving about the health benefits of the exercise, others were happy to save over Rs 500 each week, otherwise spent on petrol.

George Easo, vice president, human resources and administration, said that they plan to implement the activity in a wider manner, since more and more employees have shown interest in it. “The benefits are far-reaching,and everyone who lives nearby is enthusiastic about it,” he says, adding that after Dussehra, the next round of the bicycle initiative will take place on the auspicious mahurat of Gudi Padwa, next year.

In the past,as a part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities,EagleBurgmann India Ltd. has taken several interesting steps such as planting a hundred saplings around the company campus, flag hoisting at a women shelter, distributing sweets and donation to orphanages on festivals as well as donating substantial amount of money towards Uttarakhand relief.
