Bridge overflows,man washed away

A 40-year-old man was feared dead after he was washed away by the water current when he was crossing a flooded bridge on the Pavana river in Maval area on Monday morning.

A 40-year-old man was feared dead after he was washed away by the water current when he was crossing a flooded bridge on the Pavana river in Maval area on Monday morning. Irrigation department officials present nearby and other eye-witnesses said the man tried to cross the bridge in spite of being warned to avoid it. The incident took place at 9.30 am and his body was yet to be found till late in the evening.

As per information given by Wadgaon Maval police station,the missing person was identified as Jayavant Shinde,a resident of Bebed Ohol in Maval.

Some eye-witnesses have told police that Shinde was drunk. Police said Shinde was a farmer,originally from Mahagaon in the same region and was residing in Bebed Ohol.

S B Hodgar,a sub-inspector with Talegain Dabhade police station,said,“At 9.30 am,Shinde came to the bridge and was carrying his bicycle with him. The bridge was not visible as it was submerged and water was flowing two feet over the bridge. One of the villagers told us that he was drunk and did not pay heed to his warnings. The irrigation officials present there also warned him but he did not listen to them.”

He added,“He entered the water to cross the bridge and was washed away. We are yet to find the body and have informed villages along the river banks.”

Irrigation officials were present at the spot as they were conducting a survey of the area after the water was released from the dam. Avinash Surve,superintending engineer with the irrigation department,Pune,said,“Our officials warned him not to cross the bridge. But he did not listen.” A The search operation for the body by Talegaon police is on.
