Complainant withdraws plea against Hazare

Hemant Patil, who had filed a private criminal complaint of misappropriation of assets against activist Anna Hazare, withdrew the case on Tuesday.

Hemant Patil, who had filed a private criminal complaint of misappropriation of assets against activist Anna Hazare, withdrew the case on Tuesday. Patil, who had filed the case in 2005,cited three reasons for withdrawing the case — Hazare’s old age,his medical ailments and enhanced image in the society.

Patil had alleged that Hazare had misappropriated Rs 2.2 lakh from the funds of Hind Swaraj Trust at Ralegan Siddhi to celebrate his 61st birthday in 2005. Hazare had denied the allegations, saying he was against celebrating his own birthday.

“Patil’s evidence was recorded. The case was scheduled for continuation of Patil’s cross-examination on Tuesday,” said advocate Milind Pawar, counsel for Hazare. However,Patil through his lawyer Vrunda Karande submitted an application, stating that he wished to withdraw the complaint.

The magistrate court asked for Hazare’s say on the application and he gave his no-objection. The court further asked Patil whether he was sure that he wanted to withdraw the complaint and whether his decision was permanent. When Patil replied in affirmation, the court allowed Patil’s request and directed both parties not to challenge the order in the future.

“The court discharged Hazare from the charges, which further amounts to acquittal,” said advocate Harshad Nimbalkar, who is also the counsel for Hazare.

Changing drivers won’t help: Hazare on reshuffle

Speaking to mediapersons after attending the court proceedings,Hazare commented on the Cabinet reshuffle that took place on Tuesday. “Just changing the drivers will not help. There is a need to change the vehicle altogether,” Hazare said.

When asked about AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh’s recent comment that suspended Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi was innocent,Hazare said,“The statement simply reveals his friendship with Kalmadi and Ashok Chavan.” Hazare said preparation for fresh agitation to support a strong Lokpal Bill from August 16 are on in full swing.
