Crackdown continues, Pune zilla parishad gets notice over 18 unauthorised schools

The education commissioner has sought a response from Education Officer (Primary) Sandhya Gaikwad within 10 days.

Continuing the crackdown on unauthorised schools in the city, Education Commissioner Suraj Mandhare issued a showcause notice to the Pune zilla parishad’s primary education officer on Thursday over inaction against 18 such schools.

According to the notice, 18 schools have been running in the city without the necessary approvals and government authorisation in accordance with the provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009, or the Right to Education Act.

As per a government notice issued on June 16, divisional deputy directors of education of all districts were directed to take action against all such schools by June 21, failing which district education officers would be fined Rs 1,00,000 in addition to possible prosecution.

According to Thursday’s notice, some unauthorised schools are still functional in the city. The education commissioner has sought a response from Education Officer (Primary) Sandhya Gaikwad within 10 days.

This is part of a crackdown on unauthorised schools in Maharashtra. Some schools have been running without government approval, unapproved letters of intent or without a letter of intent at all. Others are unable to produce valid no-objection certificates or board affiliation certificates.
