It is official. Helmets will be made compulsory within Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) area. “Due to a several accidents involving two-wheelers taking place in the Cantonment area of Pune,authorities are contemplating making helmets compulsory for commuters staying in and transiting through the area. This is also in accordance with the Motor Vehicles Act and the Supreme Court directives. A joint mechanism is being worked out between the Army and the police to enforce the same from September 1,” the cantonment authorities said in a statement issued on Saturday.

The Indian Express on August 1 reported that helmets were likely to be made compulsory in the cantonment area. V S Narnavar,inspector,Lashkar and Kondhwa Traffic division,said,“The Army authorities have agreed to provide manpower. The police will be there to issue challans.” He added that the police-Army teams will ensure strict adherence to the rule,he said. The Army authorities have planned to publicise the rule through pamphlets,advertisements and hoardings.

“We are working on how to implement the rule. Another meeting with senior police and Army officials has been planned,” said an official.
