Board chairperson attributes drop to stricter vigilance
The percentage of students clearing the Higher Secondary Certificate examination from the state has gone down to 72.17% as against 78.38% last year. Board Chairperson Vijaysheela Sardesai attributed this drop to stricter vigilance by flying squads in all divisions.
According to Sardesai,Nashik division,comprising Nashik,Dhule,Jalgaon and Nandurbar districts recorded the highest pass percentage of 82.04. Latur division,known for consistently churning out toppers,put up a poor show with a mere 44.8% students clearing the exam as against 85.56% last year. Amravati and Kolhapur regions recorded a pass percentage of 81.58 and 81.46 respectively while Pune division recorded a pass percentage of 77.20%. This year,the state saw more students appearing for the HSC, Sardesai said. Girls have outshone boys with a pass percentage of 80.48 as against the 73.17 pass percentage of boys.
Students under the Minimum Competency Vocational Course scored better with 88.55% passing,followed by science at 85.80%,commerce at 71.03% and arts at 71.03%. Around 5 lakh students in the state cleared the exam with a second class,2.75 lakh scored first class and 56,000 got a distinction. Unlike the usual trend where English and Science record the lowest pass percentage,this year,Philosophy had the lowest pass percentage of 69.10%.
Meanwhile,most night schools were unaware of their results. According to the website,St Vincents Night College recorded the highest pass percentage (81.36%) followed by Poona Night High School and Junior College (56.55 %) and Late A Atre Night School and Junior College (49.12 %).
