Honour for FTII students

The National Awards announced on Thursday honoured three Film and Television Institute of India students.

The National Awards announced on Thursday honoured three Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) students. Arunima Sharma,Pratik Vats and Murli G bagged the awards for the documentaries they made as part of their second-year curriculum at FTII.

Sharma bagged the Swarna Kamal Award for Best Direction for her film Shyam Raat Seher. She also gets cash prize of Rs 1,50,000. Murli was conferred the Rajat Kamal Award for Best Cinematography for the same film. He gets a cash prize of Rs 50,000. Vats was the winner of Rajat Kamal Award for Best Short Fiction for the film Kal 15 August Dukan Band Rahegi. He gets a cash prize of Rs 50,000.

It shows how they stumble onto direct confrontation with the commodified understanding of Pandrah August in modern India. Shot over a period of three days,the film had a production budget of Rs 23,000 and was made on the ARRI 535 cameras,” said Vats,who dircted the film.

Sharma’s film is a story of a middle-aged actor trying to revive his fading television career by playing Lord Krishna in a pseudo experimental play. The film deals with the events of a crazy night when he sets out to find his wife.

Arunima is currently in London while Murli is in Chennai shooting films. Both are FTII graduates. Vats is pursuing a direction course at FTII.

“It has been a good year for the students. The number of awards has reduced; last year we won eight and the year before we bagged 11. However,deserving films have won the awards this year,” FTII director Iftekar Ahmed said.

A cash prize of Rs 50,000 and the Rajat Kamal Award was also given to the processing laboratory Film Lab in Mumbai for Shyam Raat Seher. FTII,producer of Kal 15 August Dukan Band Rahegi,was also honoured.
