In a bid to make his constituency Kasba Peth beautiful, BJP legislator Hemant Rasane has cleaned up 26 places identified by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) as “chronic dumping spots”. The MLA is now planning to hold a ‘mahapuja’ at these spots on Wednesday on the occasion of Sant Gadge Maharaj’s birth anniversary.

“I have undertaken a mission to make Kasba Peth free of garbage. Through public participation and with the civic authorities’ help, I have managed to clean 26 chronic dumping spots,” said Rasane, who was elected to the Maharashtra Assembly in November last year.

While the initiative will be launched at 11 am near New English School, the ‘Swachata Narayan Mahapuja’ will be held at all 26 locations from 5-7 pm, he said, adding, “Materials necessary for cleanliness will be worshipped during this time.”

Rasane said the mahapuja has been organised to increase public participation in the cleanliness campaign. Awareness campaigns are being conducted to ensure that citizens do not litter in the ‘chronic dumping spots’. Additionally, the number of staff has been increased and in some areas, waste is being collected twice. The areas that have been cleared will soon be beautified, said Rasane.

“As a part of this cleanliness campaign, I have decided not to put unauthorised flexboards in public places. I believe this will help enhance cleanliness, improve the environment and ease traffic congestion besides contributing to the area’s beautification,” the MLA said.

Along with PMC’s cleanliness workers, Rasane recently visited Indore which has consistently topped the list of clean cities across the country. The four pillars of Indore’s success were identified to be a well-planned, dynamic administrative strategy assisted by information technology, strong political will, public participation, and flex-free surroundings, he added.

Rasane said he is also focusing on reviving the Shaniwar Wada heritage structure, developing underground routes to solve traffic congestion issues from Sarasbaug to Shaniwar Wada on Bajirao Road and Shaniwar Wada to Swargate on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Road. “I have also requested the transfer of government land for the expansion of the Dagdusheth Ganpati Temple,” he said.
