A 21-year-old sailor from Dhule district in Maharashtra, Yash Avinash Deore, has been missing from a merchant ship sailing from Saudi Arabia to India.
A native of Deur village in Dhule, Yash joined the merchant navy last year. His family said he went on a merchant ship as an “Ordinary Seaman (OS)” through Swaraj Marines Pvt Ltd in Thane in June 2024. But on January 30 this year, Yash’s father got a call from the company that he was missing and a search operation was on.
His father immediately contacted his elder son Nayan Deore, who works at a private company in Pune. “I rushed to Thane to meet the company officials. But I did not get satisfactory information. So I contacted the Directorate General (DG) of Shipping in Mumbai. They asked the company to provide full information about my brother. We have got the ship captain’s report about the rescue operation and other details. But, till today, we have not received any concrete information about Yash,” said Nayan.

Further, on February 2, Nayan also filed an application at the Naupada police station in Thane city seeking help in tracing his brother. It stated that Yash was deployed on “MT Athina I” on the Oman to Alang (India) route. Yash last spoke to his family on January 28. Two days later, the family was told by the company that his was a case of “man overboard (fallen off the ship into the sea)” and that it happened on January 29.
Senior police inspector Abhay Mahajan of Naupada police station said, “The incident has taken place abroad. So we did not register a missing report. But we asked the company personnel to provide information about his whereabouts.”
