Senior police inspector Vikram Bansode of the Dehu Road police station said three teams have been dispatched in search of the accused persons. The police identified the deceased as Vikram Guruswami Reddy, 37. The attack happened when Reddy was attending the birthday party of his friend Nandakumar Yadav’s niece.
The police said three people on a motorcycle passing through the area reportedly picked up a quarrel with Yadav following some petty reason. One of the three men, identified as Aftab, allegedly banged a chair on Yadav’s head.
Reddy intervened to stop the men from beating his friend. But they opened fire from a pistol and Reddy received a bullet injury on his chest.
After receiving information, a team from the Pimpri-Chinchwad police rushed to the spot. Reddy was taken to a hospital, but he was declared dead. His friend Yadav was provided treatment at the hospital.
