MNS not to contest in Khadakwasla

Party to stay away from bypoll as tribute to Ramesh Wanjale.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena will not contest the Khadakwasla Assembly bypoll. MNS chief Raj Thackeray announced that after Harshada, wife of deceased MLA Ramesh Wanjale, refused to contest on their ticket, the party had decided not to field a candidate for the seat. Harshada will now contest as an NCP candidate.

The byelection was necessitated after Ramesh Wanjale’s sudden death in June due to a heart attack. Wanjale was a first-time MNS MLA from Khadakwasla constituency.”It is ironical that Harshada and Wanjale family have decided to join those people who did not give any credence to Wanjale when he was asking for ticket during 2009 elections. By refusing to contest the elections,MNS is paying true tribute to Wanjale,” said Thackeray.

Thackeray traced the political competition between MNS and NCP to get Harshada as their candidate. “I do not want to enter such dirty politics played by NCP. People can decide whether to vote for them or now. Our decision is final that we will not contest the seat,” said Thackeray.

Likely to make formal entry into NCP on Thursday,Harshada was cautious while responding to MNS chief Raj Thackeray’s announcement — which included affectionate words like “our Wanjale” — that his party will not field candidate for Khadakwasla bypoll as a tribute to her husband. She refused to comment on Thackeray’s statement. “She has decided not to comment on it and would talk to media on Thursday,” her associate said.

Harshada has not formally announced about the political party she would represent in the polls but collected the application form as an NCP candidate from the election office. The NCP has been wooing her to contest on the party ticket as the Assembly segment is part of the Baramati parliamentary constitutency represented by Supriya Sule, daughter of NCP chief Sharad Pawar. NCP leaders have already confirmed that Harshada will contest on their party ticket.
