Nagpur resident dies of rabies, 2nd case reported by PMC this year

Fifty-six-year old Ravindra Phadke from Nagpur died of rabies at Naidu hospital in Pune. This is the second death registered due to rabies by the PMC this year.

Dr S T Pardeshi, acting medical chief of the PMC, said Phadke was admittted to the hospital, which has an isolation ward for rabies patients, on January 20.

He was brought to the hospital from Sassoon General Hospital in an ambulance, said Dr Anjali Sabne, Deputy Medical Officer of Health, PMC.

He showed symptoms like fear of air and water, and was breathless upon admission, Sabne said, adding that no relatives or friends accompanied the patient.

She pointed out that the Animal Birth Control Programme had also been upgraded from Rs 40 to Rs 80 lakh.

Out of the 19 cases of rabies death registered by the PMC last year, six were from Pune city. The civic body has now started a ward-wise programme of sterililisation and vaccination of dogs, and from September till date, more than 3,000 dogs have been sterilised.
