New medical technology promises relief from spine-related problems

A new technology called Coblation for treatment of patients with contained herniated discs, who have not been cured with conservative methods and are not yet candidates for major surgery,is showing results.

Coblation uses radio frequency which decreases the risk of thermal damage to surrounding tissues

A new technology called Coblation for treatment of patients with contained herniated discs, who have not been cured with conservative methods and are not yet candidates for major surgery,is showing results. Dr Rajesh Parasnis from Ruby Hall and Oyster & Pearl Hospital has already operated upon nearly 10 such patients with success.

“Nucleoplasty is a method of disc decompression, based on the Coblation technology. A needle is inserted into the disc, through which a radio frequency probe is passed and a highly focussed plasma field with enough energy is generated to break up the molecular bonds of the Nucleus Pulposus. The result is that around 1-2 cc of Nucleus Pulposus is removed which decompresses the disc and reduces the pressure of the disc on the surrounding nerve root. The high energy plasma field is generated at a relatively low temperature minimising the risk of damage to the surrounding tissue. Nucleoplasty also reduces the risk of open procedure,” Dr Parasnis said at a press conference in the city.

Citing a case of a patient who was an IT Professional,Dr Parasnis said the patient was suffering from back and leg pain due to long hours sitting on the job. He underwent conservative treatment like rest, medication, painkillers and physiotherapy but to no avail. Nucleoplasty was performed on him which gave him relief from the pain. Like Ravi there have been many others who have benefited from this technology.

“Pune was earlier a city for retired people but after the advent of multinationals and IT companies its pace has matched that of any other metropolis in India.

This has given rise to different kind of lifestyle among the residents where most of them are suffering from back pain due to long working hours and faulty ergonomics. The stress levels are also very high and all this takes a toll on their bodies. It is quite shocking that many people in the city are suffering from back and neck problem and are in the age group of 25 – 45,” added Dr Parasnis.

Coblation uses radio frequency which decreases the risk for thermal damage to surrounding tissues. Coblation provides a more precise operative result and reduces surgical time. The patient is admitted a few hours before the surgery.

This procedure reduces post-operative pain and the recovery is fast,he said. Nucleoplasty is one of the latest minimally invasive procedures to treat patients with contained herniated discs.
