Now,learn to drive on own vehicle,at own pace

Lessons from a reputed driving school in the city could not egg on Shilpa Adhikari to take to the wheel of her own car.

Lessons from a reputed driving school in the city could not egg on Shilpa Adhikari to take to the wheel of her own car . She was onthe verge of giving up when she came across a driving school that agreed to give her lessons in her own vehicle. Within two weeks, she had the confidence to drive even on congested roads.

Many driving schools are offering tailor-made services for customers. “When you learn driving in the trainer’s vehicle, apart from you,it is the instructor who controls the clutch and brake. Though the training gives you a fair idea on driving and seems to work for most there are a few who desire to get trained in their own vehicles with them in control of the wheel,” said Umesh Dattatreya Pore who has trained more than 200 people in two years. He claims 90 per cent of his customers include those who have attended some driving school at least once or more than once.

Perfect Driving School on Mundhwa Road also offers such services but say only a niche group prefers it. “We don’t mind altering our teaching method as per customer reuirement. We need to be more cautious while teaching in the client’s vehicle,” says Nazir Tamboli.

Considering queries from customers,Sai Motor Driving School in Karvenagar has come up with a package called ‘advanced training’,that includes first 10 days of training in school’s vehicle and remining five days in learner’s four-wheeler.

Some driving schools say a major chunk of requests for personalised driving lessons comes from women. Adhikari says,“The time limit in driving schools is not sufficient. Besides, you are not sure whether you are controlling the vehicle or the instructor.” Adhikari feels personalised training, although expensive is more systematic. However, the trend, gradually picking up and has many takers,is considered ‘risky’ by some driving schools. “We do get requests but we strictly give training in our own vehicles primarily because customer’s vehicles do not have dual control. It is a risk,” says Bharati Bhalerao,Trishul Motor Driving School,Aundh.

While the cost of learning a four-wheeler in a vehicle provided by the training school is anywhere between Rs 2000 and Rs 2200,driving schools charge between Rs 3000 and Rs 3500 for teaching in your own vehicle, depending on car model.

Besides the choice of vehicle, the personalised driving training also includes duration options.
