Number of private vehicles go up: Report

The city witnessed an increase of 2.19 lakh private vehicles on roads in 2011 compared to 1.82 lakh new vehicles in 2010,says a report.

The city witnessed an increase of 2.19 lakh private vehicles on roads in 2011 compared to 1.82 lakh new vehicles in 2010,says a report .

According to the Environment Status Report (ESR),the city has been witnessing a substantial increase in the number of two- wheelers in the past few years. This continued in 2011 with the regional traffic office registering as many as 1.55 lakh more two wheelers.

The second highest rise was registered by new cars. In 2011,number of cars was 3.35 lakh,an increase of 48,000 from 2.87 lakh in 2010.

The report said the main reason for air pollution was vehicles plying on city roads,including national highway.

It further states that civic body’s efforts for mass transit system,Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) and Metro rail would help ease the situation. The reduction in traffic would help in lowering pollution levels and ensure clean environment in the city,the report said.
