(File)Three people including two senior citizens were injured by nylon manja on the day of the Sankranti in Pune. The third victim is a 12-year-old girl who has been grievously injured on her tongue.
In the first incident, Devram Dattatreya Kamte, (67) a resident of Shivajinagar was injured while riding a two wheeler on Tuesday evening. While on his way towards Shaniwarwada, a stray nylon manja thread suddenly came in front of him. Kamte lost his balance while trying to escape the thread, which managed to entangle around his thumb. Kamte was administered first aid and released from the hospital the same day.
In the second incident Baban Divte (70) and Vandan Dethe (12) were injured due to the manja thread. Divte was seriously injured on his leg, whie Dethe was injured on her tongue. Both are being treated at the Sassoon General Hospital at present.
Usage of nylon manja for kite flying has been the cause of many accidents in the recent past, particularly around Sankranti. The Pune Police had urged people to avoid using nylon manja, while there is a ban on the sale of the same. Nylon Manja, however, is still being sold on the black market.
