On the run,Mankar’s property to be attached

The city police have decided to attach the property of Congress corporator Deepak Mankar,who is accused of forcibly acquiring several properties in the city.

Mankar is absconding at the moment. “We will submit a proposal to the court under Sections 82 and 83 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to declare Mankar a proclaimed offender and then attach his property. Once the court declares him a proclaimed offender,we will initiate the process of attaching his property,” Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh said on Monday.

“So far,we have a list of 56 properties in the

name of Mankar and his family members. We will check the sources of income of Mankar’s family members who own the properties,” Singh said. “A special Crime Branch team is verifying the details and evaluating the cost of property owned by Mankar. The property must be worth around Rs 30 crore or even more,” Singh added.

Police said Mankar is likely to submit an application for his anticipatory bail at the high court.

Meanwhile,the Crime Branch teams are on the look out for Mankar and other accomplices,including former corporator Datta Sagare,builder Sudheer Karnataki and Sadhana Vartak,who handled finances of Mankar’s land deals. Deputy Commissioner (crime) Anil Kumbhare said,“Mankar’s case is our top priority. Our teams are looking for him…we are trying our best.”

The Crime Branch has found out the details of financial transaction between Karnataki and Sadhana Vartak. Police have got the bank transaction records which show that Karnataki has been giving lakhs of rupees to Vartak since 2004. Police said Vartak received Rs 10 lakh from Karnataki on February 4,2008. This was just two days before the suspects had threatened the Natu family at Shukrawar Peth. Police said Yeshwant Natu was allegedly forced to sign the property deal documents at the sub-registrar’s office on March 10,2008. And on March 13,Vartak received Rs 15 lakh from Karnataki.

The Crime Branch has received three more complaints of land grabbing against Mankar.
