PMC to make 10 additional electoral panels container free

The dry waste is disposed by the waste collectors and sold for recycling.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to extend its initiative of container free electoral panels to 10 more areas after its successful implementation in 20 electoral panels.

As per the initiative, the PMC provides the following facilities: ghanta gadi and hand carts along with safety gears, to waste collectors for door-to-door waste collection so that citizens need not dump waste in the containers in their vicinity. The waste collectors are provided by SWACH, a cooperative of door-to-door waste collectors. NGO JANWANI is coordinating the initiative by seeking the participation of the corporate sector.

“The garbage container-free initiative has been successful in the 20 electoral panels where it has been implemented so far. Thus, it can be extended to cover a greater area and ensure the cleanliness of the city,” said corporators, while supporting the administration’s proposal.
The PMC initiative had received praise from the parliamentary committee on urban development during its recent visit to Pune. They had urged the civic administration to send the details of the initiative to the union government so that it could be replicated in other cities across country.
