Ramtekdi garbage stench: 87 industrial units to move HC

The 87 industrial units in Ramtekdi industrial area that have been protesting against the garbage processing plant nearby have decided take the legal route to bring about a solution.

The 87 industrial units in Ramtekdi industrial area that have been protesting against the garbage processing plant nearby have decided take the legal route to bring about a solution. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had established the plant,which processes 80-100 tonnes of garbage a day,in September last year. The stench from the unit affects employees in the industrial belt,apart from nearby residents,said Ramtekdi Industrial Association chairman Pramod Dabir.

We held a general body meeting on Saturday and have decided to approach the Bombay High Court regarding the issue, said Dabir.

The stench emanates because the PMC does not bother to segregate plastic or other non-degradable waste from the degradable. The plant needs special technicians to operate it and ensure it is stench-free, said Mauli Kudale, BJP president (Hadapsar constituency). The BJP and the MNS had staged agitations against the garbage processing unit a few months ago.

Former mayor and local corporator Rajlakshmi Bhosales Disha Foundation runs the garbage processing unit. The other two NCP corporators,Dattatray Sasane and Anand Halkunde,were against the garbage processing unit being set up in the industrial area. The unit was sanctioned by the standing committee. A couple of corporators from Hadapsar area opposed the plant,but the majority voted in its favour, said Halkunde.

Every evening,the stench affects residents at Gadital,Satav Wadi,Mahadev Wadi,Mundhwa Road and so on. Noble Hospital and some small clinics are also affected. Spread over 150 acres near Hadapsar,the Ramtekdi industrial area has engineering,food industry and liquor units.
