To understand the learning ability of students, the education department has decided to conduct a state-wide baseline survey in the last week of the month. As part of the survey, all the primary school students from Class 2 to 8 will be required to appear for a test that will also be applicable to schools under other boards.
However, the schools in the city denied receiving any such information from the education department and some have even announced holidays in the last week of the month.
“The test will be conducted in all the schools. Last year, we had conducted a pilot survey and only a few schools were a part of it. This year, schools from all over the state will be covered irrespective of their affiliations to other boards like Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) or other international boards. The test will be conducted to evaluate the language and mathematical learning ability of the students,” said Govind Nandede, director, SCERT.

The question paper will be based on what students have studied until previous year and it will be the same across the state for respective classes. “The students will be judged for languages taught to them in schools as far as the language papers are concerned. However, the question paper will be same for a particular class. The students will be marked out of 30 in Class 2, 40 in Class 3 and 4, 50 in Class 5 and 6 and 60 in Class 7 and 8,” said Nandede.
He added,”The papers will be checked by teachers in the school and the marks will be uploaded in the online student database. To ensure the numbers are not tampered with, we will conduct a baseline survey through an NGO to cross check marks given by the schools,” added Nandede.
Nandede said the state government had taken the decision to conduct baseline survey in the state.
“Every school in the state has to be a part of the survey. After the results, if a particular school’s or area’s results are not up to the mark, teachers, field officers and others will analyse the situation and come up with ways for better practices in teaching,” said Nandede.
Meanwhile, the school principals who Newsline spoke to declined any intimation from the education department. Moreover, schools such as St Mary’s School and Bishop’s School have even announced a vacation in the last week of the month. “We have not received any intimation from the education department so far. I will not be able to comment about the exam,” said Sujata Mallic, principal, St Mary’s School.
Vidya Valley School principal Nalini Sengupta said that she is yet to receive any intimation but the school welcomes the move. A parent, who did not wish to be named, said,”Almost all the children have exams in August. Now, the government is conducting another exam. The goverment is taking decisions which are only going to increase the work load of students.”
