Now,the auto rickshaw drivers in the city will wear badges starting December 1 and uniform from January. The decision came after a meeting held between the traffic police department, rickshaw unions and regional transport authority (RTA).
However, nothing has been decided on making uniform and badges mandatory for cab drivers in the city.
After some untoward incidents involving travelers,Manoj Patil,DCP,traffic department had called a meeting of RTA officials and rickshaw unions on October 29 where it was decided that all rickshaw drivers in the city would wear uniforms and badges from December 1.
However, after a section of the drivers protested the move, the traffic police department again called a meeting on Saturday, which was attended by RTA member Baba Shinde and rickshaw union members. Although it was decided that auto drivers must wear badges from December 1,the representatives of rickshaw unions demanded a months time before uniform is made compulsory for all rickshaw drivers. All rickshaw unions in the city except one have agreed to same.
Wearing badge and uniform by the rickshaw and cab drivers is necessary as it will help the police to track down the rickshaws plying illegally and involved it crimes, said Manoj Patil.
A meeting chaired by Patil will be held on December 5 in which the decision on enforcement of badges and uniforms for cab drivers will be taken.
