Ten-year-old Kushal Patel had a narrow escape on Tuesday after he slipped and fell on the road after boarding the school bus in Pimpri. Kushal, a Class 5 student of Judson School, fractured his left leg. Doctors suspect a fracture in his right leg and an examination will be conducted on Thursday. The incident highlighted the manner in which school buses function. A resident of Indrayani Nagar, Kushal sprinted after the bus as it was trying to come to a halt on the road that heads towards the Pune-Mumbai highway. In the sudden rush of students to get into the bus, Kushal slipped and fell. Vehicles following the school bus screeched to a halt, but the school bus driver was apparently unaware of the incident and tried to steer the vehicle towards the highway. A two-wheeler rider blocked the bus and alerted the driver. The driver, instead of taking Kushal to hospital, took him to his house in Indrayani Nagar, nearly 8 km from the school, after dropping all other students which meant Kushal was taken to his house a good one hour after the accident. Kushal hardly smiles and refuses to speak. When asked how the accident happened, Kushal said, “I fell on the road.” The school was not aware of it till Wednesday afternoon. “We came to know about it only after the parents complained to us.” said principal F Saldhana. The parents complained to the principal that the driver does not allow children to board the bus comfortably.
