Techie gets life for murder of fiancee of ex-boyfriend

In 2011, Anushree had set ablaze her ex-boyfriend Nimesh and his fiancee Juhi; Nimesh survived, but Juhi, a Delhi-based lawyer, succumbed to burn injuries.

A TECHIE-turned-fitness trainer, Anushree Kundra, has been sentenced to life imprisonment on Tuesday in connection with the murder of 26-year-old Delhi-based lawyer Juhi Prasad, the fiancee of her ex-boyfriend Nimesh Sinha, in a flat in Pune in October 2011. Anushree had set Juhi and Nimesh on fire. Juhi sustained 80 per cent burns and succumbed to her injuries, after she narrated the entire sequence of events to the police.

Kundra, who is now 43 years old, is a divorcee and has a child who lives with her ex-husband. She and Sinha, who is now 32, were living together from 2007 to 2010 while they were working together in an IT company in Delhi. Sinha’s parents had come to know about Nimesh’s live-in relationship and strongly objected to it. He left his job in Delhi and moved to Pune and later had got engaged to 26-year-old lawyer from Delhi Juhi, who was working with the legal department of a corporate company in Delhi.

short article insert On October 13, Juhi had come to Pune to spend the weekend with Nimesh. Kundra had got to know about the engagement and had come to Pune from Bangalore where she was working during the same time. When she came to know about Juhi being there in Nimesh’s flat in Wanawadi, she stormed into their house in the evening and had a heated argument with the couple. Later at night, she returned to their residence—this time with a can of petrol. She poured it on Sinha and Juhi and set them on fire. Sinha suffered 15% burns and was discharged later. Juhi, with her over 80 per cent injuries, battled for life for nine days and died on October 22.

Kundra, who was absconding after the event for a month, surrendered before a court in Pune and since then has been lodged in the women’s jail in Yerawada. The trial in the case began in January this year and the prosecution submitted the last piece of evidence in November. The court of district and sessions judge LL Yenkar, gave the ruling in the case on Tuesday. Kundra’s lawyer Vaibhav Jathar said, “The court has sentenced Kundra to life imprisonment. We would be making an appeal in the case in the High Court in the coming day.” Court has also awarded her seven years of rigorous imprisonment.

Meanwhile, Kundra had filed a case against Sinha under Indian Penal Code section 376 for rape and accusing him of sexually exploiting her. A chargesheet in that case has been filed and the court case is currently on. Sinha currently works in Delhi and is unmarried.
Juhi’s father, AN Prasad, who practised law in Patna and is now retired, had filed a petition in the court stating that Sinha had a role to play in the murder. The court has squashed the petition. Juhi was his only daughter. The Prasad family is related to senior BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy.

Speaking to The Indian Express from Patna over phone, Prasad sai”, “I knew that the ruling was to be delivered today but I was not aware of the judgement. I too fought my battle but my petition about Sinha’s role was not entertained. The court has ruled today but my daughter will not come back. There is not a single day that goes by without remembering her.”
