Since vehicles crossing speed limits has always been one of the major causes of accidents leading to fatalities on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, the highway police are now seeking at least two more speed guns in addition to the existing two to keep a tab on speed of vehicles .
The highway police put forward the demand in a meeting organised by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce,Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) on Friday, along with the officials of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). In the meeting, the MCCIA gave its recommendations in order to remove various problems faced by commuters on the expressway.
At present,we have got two speed guns to keep a check on the overspeeding motorists. We have been continuously taking action against rash drivers with the help of these speed guns. In the past two months,we have registered close to a thousand cases against the speed violators. However, this monitoring could be further enhanced if we get at least another couple of speed guns, Jay Jadhav, superintendent of police,Pune highway police said.
Excessive speed by four-wheelers on express highway could lead to bursting of tyres, overturning of vehicles at curves, collision with other vehicles and distraction to other vehicles, ultimately leading to casualties or fatalities on the expressway. “So far,the expressway has witnessed hundreds of accidents, overspeeding has always been one of the prime causes of such accidents,” Chandmal Parmar, chairman of MCCIAs transport committee said, adding,”Therefore, apart from the strict enforcement of speed limit, regular use of speed guns, imposition of heavy fines on the overspeeding vehicles and awareness programmes by MSRDC,police should be conducted on a regular basis.” Since the cost of one speed gun is approximately Rs 10 lakh, there is an option of purchasing a photo radar, which is much cost effective than a speed gun. In fact three such radars could be bought in place of one speed gun,” Parmar said.
Considering the shortage of medical facilities on the expressway, the MCCIA has also recommended full-time deployment of trained para-medical staff and doctors is the need.
There should be sufficient number of ambulances on the expressway. Its other demands include availability of heavy-duty cranes for removing heavy vehicles, and raising check-posts for the vehicles.
