Danseuse Smita Mahajan’s Bharatnatyam performance Unmesh Margam will bring out the intensity of inter-personal relationships
Bharatnatyam has always been rich in its form and content. Both elements aesthetically unfold through the margam the sequence in which the composition is presented. It is a well thought out,age-old string of performances. I wanted to name it Unmesh Margam which means the opening of a new vision in the old pathway, says danseuse Smita Mahajan who will be performing the classical dance on August 27. A Sangeet Visharad from the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya,Mahajan has written and composed the songs and also choreographed the performance.
Unmesh Margam is a compilation of melody, graceful moves and thoughtful lyrics. This new repertoire goes well along with the margam pattern and retains its traditions with a tinge of newness, adds Mahajan who is a post graduate degree holder in dance from the University of Pune. Presently she is an assistant professor of dance at the university.
The content of the performance is thematic with no mythological characters in the lyrics. Mahajan strives hard to give her audience a blend of the traditional and modern. She has experimented with characters keeping a young audience in mind. Youngsters look for something more relevant than devdasis, kings and queens and other mythological characters, says Mahajan.
Unmesh Margam showcases the intensity of interpersonal relationships of human beings. Human relationships are universal and they appeal to the young and old alike, she says, confident that people will connect to Unmesh Margam immediately after witnessing the first performance.
The event commences with the padam which interprets the dilemmas of an adolescent girl who is confused about her male friend. The second padam is about the tensions between two female friends. It will be followed by the single nayaka padam which brings out the confusion in a boy’s heart when he is head over heels in love with a girl. Another padam explores the bonding between a mother and daughter.
(The event is being organised in association with Lalit Kala Kendra,University of Pune and Gurukul at the auditorium of the Maharashtra Education Society on August 27 at 5.30 pm)
