Actor Randeep Hooda on Monday said that Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar did not get the recognition he deserved in the freedom struggle of India.
The actor was speaking during the trailer launch event of his upcoming movie ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’ at Amphi Theatre of Fergusson College, where Savarkar had studied.

While addressing the congregation, the actor advised students to read more about Savarkar, his ideologies, and his struggles.
Satyaki Savarkar, IT engineer at Balewadi and grandnephew of Savarkar, said, “Savarkar was the unsung warrior of freedom struggle. He is the most misinterpreted personality of the national movement. I am happy that this movie will present his real side to the world.”
Actor Ankita Lokhande, who has played Savarkar’s wife Yamuna Bai in the film, shared that when she was offered the role, she did not know much about his wife. “My role in the movie is brief, but the part will leave an imprint on the audience’s mind,” she said.
Both the Hooda and Lokhande visited the hostel room where Savarkar used to stay while he was a student at the college — from 1902 to 1905.
To portray the condition of Savarkar while he was lodged in the cellular jail, Hooda lost around 30 kg weight.
The movie is set to be released in both Hindi and Marathi on March 15. In the Marathi version, the voice for Savarkar’s character is dubbed by noted actor Subodh Bhave.
