A Speeding car hit a road divider near Aditya Birla Hospital in Thergaon,killing a software professional and injuring his three friends at 4.15 am on Monday. Police have identified the deceased as Manoj Dighavkar (25) of Chinchwad. Police said Manoj was operating a software firm and was reportedly a relative of IPS officer Pratap Dighavkar.
Manoj,along with his friends Amit Dikshit (26),Abhishek Tiwari (27) and Ankita went for dinner around 11 pm on Sunday and then went to the airport around 12.30 am in a car to receive Aabha,sister of Manoj’s business partner. Police said Tiwari was driving the car.
After dropping Aabha and Ankita at their homes in Chinchwad,the trio were returning home when Tiwari allegedly lost control and the car hit the road divider in front of Birla Hospital. The impact was so severe that Manoj,who was sitting on the rear seat,died on the spot. Dikshit and Tiwari were injured and were admitted to a hospital.
The Hinjewadi police registered a complaint against Tiwari for careless and rash driving. The first information report was lodged by Dikshit. Assistant police inspector S G Kale is investigating the case.
Police said Manoj did BE (Electrical) from D Y Patil College and started his own software firm two years ago and was also studying for competitive examinations. His father is an engineer with MSEDCL,Nashik,and his brother is an engineer with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Student killed
In another accident,a bus ran over school student Aniket Gajanan Chenche (13) while he was going home on a bicycle around 3 pm on Monday. The mishap took place near Bharat Forge office in Ghodpadi. The Mundhwa police arrested bus driver Ramananda Dhangar (37).
Local citizens took Chenche to Sassoon Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Meanwhile,an angry mob ransacked the bus after the incident. A police force was deployed at the spot where the police had to resort to a mild-lathi charge to control the situation.
Police said Chenche of Milind Nagar was a student of Ghorpadi Village High School. Aniket is survived by his parents and three sisters. His father works with a private company. The Mundhwa police is investigating the case.
PMPML bus hits vehicles
Meanwhile,a PMPML bus hit five vehicles,including an autorickshaw and four two-wheelers,at the traffic junction near Balgandharva Rang Mandir around 6 pm on Monday. Six persons were injured in the mishap. A mob thrashed the bus driver after the mishap. Driver Vitthal Shelke (31) of Kothrud was detained by the Shivajinagar police. Later in evening,a complaint was lodged against him for careless driving.
S K Pathan,the autorickshaw driver who was injured,said,”We were waiting at the red signal when the PMPML bus suddenly came from behind and started hitting vehicles one by one. My rickshaw was badly damaged. Fortunately the passengers inside were not hurt.”
A motorcycle was crushed between the autorickshaw and the bus. Police said the motorcyclist along with his daughter and wife were injured and were admitted to a private hospital. Two girls and an elderly man were also injured.
Five injured in E-way mishap
Five persons,including three Ideal Road Builders (IRB) staffers,were injured in a road mishap near Madap tunnel on the Pune-Mumbai expressway around 8.30 pm on Sunday. According to the police,on getting information about a broken car near Madap,the IRB staffers,including a Delta Force guard,went to the spot. While they were getting the car on the road side,another speeding car coming from behind hit them. IRB staffers Gajanan Mukadam (32),Tejas Dalvi (25),the Delta force guard Rajesh Shelar,along with car passengers Santosh Sharma (36) and Tanaji Lovate (37),were injured. They were admitted to hospital.
The car driver fled with the vehicle. The Khalapur police is investigating the case.
