University of Pune has decided to set up faculty of technology for interdisciplinary courses in engineering and science.

University of Pune (UoP) has decided to set up faculty of technology for interdisciplinary courses in engineering and science. The move has come up as a follow up of announcement of industry sponsored integrated MTech-PhD course by Vice-Chancellor R K Shevgaonkar at the start of this academic year. The course is expected to commence from next academic year.

The proposal to start faculty of technology was ratified at the recently concluded meeting of management council of the varsity. UoP is the first university in the state to establish a faculty of technology.

At the beginning of the academic year,Shevgaonkar had announced that the varsity would start an integrated PhD programme to fulfil the long pending demand of postgraduate department of engineering. The V-C had also approached MCCIA and Computer Society of India to get industry for sponsorship.

W N Gade, director of board of college and university development, said the management council passed the proposal to establish faculty of technology as a logical step forward to the announcement of integrated MTech-PhD programme. “The programme will be run under the newly formed faculty. The programme will have interdisciplinary approach and the industry will also play a role in framing the curriculum,” he said.

He also said the varsity was expecting funding for the establishment of the faculty from the university for potential of excellence (UPE) programme of the University Grant Commission (UGC). “The UGC team for UPE programme will visit the UoP on January 19. We will discuss the proposal with them,” he said. “Last year the varsity had submitted a proposal to the UGC for Rs 100-crore fund under the UPE scheme for various projects.”
