TWO days after insects were found in the food served at refectory, students of the University of Pune (UoP) on Monday called off the agitation after Vice-Chancellor Wasudev Gade constituted an inquiry committee to probe the quality of food and lapses at the varsity.

The three-member inquiry committee will comprise representatives from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and hostel students.

Gade announced the decision to form the inquiry committee after deliberations with students and the contractor, who runs the refectory.

After the incidence on Saturday, students had been demanding that rather than hiring a private contractor, the varsity should run the catering facility on its own.

Students had held a protest demonstration outside Vice-Chancellor’s office on Saturday.

“After protesting for two days,we met the vice-chancellor today. We told him that the quality of food has gone from bad to worse even though several private contractors have been given the charge of three canteens and refectories on the campus,” said a student.

“The vice-chancellor gave a patient hearing to our complaints and assured that he will address our problems,” he added.
