Police Commissioner Meeran Borwankar on Monday said there would not be any favouritism while filing cases against Ganesh Mandals for violating noise norms. She said that action would be taken against any Ganesh Mandal,be it small or big,for violating noise norms. CCTV footages and video shootings would be checked to find out the mandals that violated noise norms.
As per the government rules,Ganesh Mandals were not allowed to play loud music between 12 pm and 6 am during the immersion procession. Police had appealed the mandals to follow the noise restriction norms.
Some mandals followed the noise restrictions but there were several mandals that continued to play music even after the 12 pm deadline. Members of the mandals, who followed the noise norms, expressed their displeasure at the turn of events. They questioned the police as to why the big mandals were allowed to play music after 12 pm.
Borwankar said some youngsters approached her with a complaint. The youngsters said that they have stopped playing musical instruments due to the noise restrictions. They were idealistic. They asked why the big mandals were allowed to play music. I felt bad, said Borwankar.
There will not be any favouritism while filing cases. We have taken video shootings and also the CCTV footages of the procession are available. We would go through the videos and then file cases against mandals that violated noise norms. Along with the mandals,we may also take action against dolby system operators and the groups playing traditional musical instruments, she said.
Borwankar further said that action would also be taken against Ganesh Mandals who had erected arch of height beyond stipulated limits.
The police have filed as many as 1004 offences under various sections of Criminal Procedure Code and Bombay Police Act as preventive measure during the Ganesh festival that started on September 1.
