Work to prepare electoral roll under way, voter count dips

The work of compiling electoral roll of the Pune Cantonment Board is currently under way for the PCB election due in May next year.

The work of compiling electoral roll of the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) is currently under way for the PCB election due in May next year.

An annual process, the primary electoral roll for 2012 was released on July 1 with 40,484 voters. The final electoral roll with claims and objections would be submitted on September 15.

A PCB official said,“As per the cantonment rule, the preliminary list is released on July 1 every year. Residents are given 20 days to file objections and claims. The final list is submitted on September 15. We are due for elections next year prior to which the lists will be prepared again.” Out of PCB’s eight wards, one is reserved, three are for women while four are open. Last year, the voter count of the PCB was 52,103,11,619 more than this year’s count.

“The reasons for the dip in number of eligible voters could be many. For instance,M G Road was earlier a residential zone, but today, not many choose to stay here due to with commercialisation. There are new additions every year, besides deaths and migration,” the official said. In PCB’s last polls in 2007,the voter count was 47,975. The compilation of electoral roll is also being undertaken by the Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB).
