Video of violent scuffle during Rishikesh river rafting goes viral, police initiate probe

The Uttarakhand Police recently took cognizance of a viral video showing several rafters involved in a violent scuffle on the River Ganga in Rishikesh.

Tehri Garhwal SSP Navneet Singh said they came to know about the incident after the video went viral on social media, but they were yet to find out when and where the incident took place. In the purported video, rafters on three to four different rafts are seen beating one another with raft paddles. Some of the rafters are seen jumping into the river.

“The video came to our knowledge on Saturday, but we have not received any complaint. We are trying to confirm the rafting company by closely inspecting the video. We will call them and confirm when the incident took place,” said Singh.

Muni Ki Reti SHO Ritesh Shah said that while some people claimed the incident took place three days ago, others said the video is much older.

“We also do not know the exact location of this violent scuffle as there is not much in the video. There are two different police station jurisdictions in the Rishikesh rafting path. We are trying to confirm the rafting company based on the logo on the rafts… We will also write a letter to the tourism officer and request him to cancel the licence of the company and the rafting guide,” he said.

Tehri Garhwal SP Navneet Singh said the police were investigating the incident and a case will also be registered in this matter.
