DEFENCE MINISTER Rajnath Singh, who was scheduled to address a public meeting in Jharkhand’s Sahibganj on Monday, could not reach the venue because of bad weather. However, he went on to address the rally via mobile phone. He dialled a BJP leader in Sahibganj, who put his phone on speaker near the mic, and Singh delivered his speech.

Sources close to the minister said this was not the first time Singh virtually addressed a rally. In Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first term, when Singh was the Union Home Minister, he delivered a speech on phone during a public meeting in Uri in J&K after his helicopter could not take off from Srinagar due to bad weather.

Diary Habit

THE NATIONAL Investigation Agency’s newly appointed Director General, Sadanand Date, has asked all his senior officers to ensure that their subordinates maintain a “morning diary” — a practice followed by all state/UT police in which officers maintain an account of their work over the last 24 hours and share it with their superiors. After joining the NIA, it is learnt, the new DG found that there was no concept of a morning diary in the agency. He told all senior officers to introduce the practice and he will take an update from them.

BAHUJAN SAMAJ PARTY (BSP) leader Akash Anand may have been removed from the post of the party’s national coordinator “until he attains maturity”, but his name is still there in the BSP’s list of star campaigners for the seventh phase of Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. The BSP had submitted the list to the Election Commission on May 7, hours before removing Anand from the party’s senior position. Away from the BSP’s campaign, Anand is keeping a low-profile and not taking part in any election-related meeting. Sources said he is focusing on his business and meeting selected BSP leaders in his individual capacity. The party workers, however, continue to remain in contact with Anand as they see him as Mayawati’s successor again in the near future, the sources said.
