The race to bag a seat at the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is expected to get tougher this year, say experts, considering the difficult question paper for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) – Advanced held on Sunday. While the papers were on a lengthier side, Mathematics and Physics sections were more difficult, with trickier questions. The Chemistry section had a balanced approach, according to students. The students got no respite as they would have anticipated due to Covid, which according to few experts, is going to tell the difference between those who had access to coaching and the ones who did not. If the aggregate marks scored by two or more candidates are the same, then the following tie-break policy will be used for awarding ranks:
Step 1: Candidates having higher positive marks will be awarded higher rank. If the tie breaking criterion at Step 1 fails to break the tie, then the following criterion at Step 2 will be followed.
Step 2: Higher rank will be assigned to the candidate who has obtained higher marks in Mathematics. If this does not break the tie, higher rank will be assigned to the candidate who has obtained higher marks in Physics.
If there is a tie even after this, candidates will be assigned the same rank.
Questions will be displayed on the screen in the default language (English or Hindi), chosen by the candidate. Further, the candidate can also switch/ toggle between English and Hindi languages, as the viewing language for any question, any time during the entire period of the examination. Following the National Education Policy’s recommendations, the Education Ministry formed a committee to set up offshore campuses that would be mentored by Indian higher educational institutions.
The committee went on to suggest that IITs could start institutions abroad with its brand’s name based on inputs from 26 Indian embassies across the world. This was done to encourage “high performing Indian universities to set up campuses in other countries, keeping in view the demand from various quarters for opening of campus abroad”.
What did the committee say about offshore campuses? How were the host countries chosen? Going forward, how will these institutions work? Harleenn Agarwal explains
Candidates can carry personal transparent water bottles along with them inside the exam hall.

The revised syllabus of JEE Advanced 2023 was recently released. The process of revising the syllabus however started way back in 2019. The IIT Council had formed a special committee for the purpose.
The syllabus is more aligned with NCERT books, Ashish Arora, Centre Head, Allen Career Institute, Jaipur, told indianexpress.com. “JEE Main syllabus covers all the topics that students learn in class 10, 12 as part of the NCERT syllabus. But, JEE Advanced syllabus was different and had chapters and topics that students did not learn as part of their school curriculum,” Arora added.
He, however, feels that the move is not going to make much difference for the students as there have been more additions than reductions in the syllabus. Read full report by Sheetal Banchariya
