GATE Result 2023 Updates: Meet stream-wise toppers

The IIT Kanpur director Abhay Karandikar today tweeted that if someone's result has been withheld, it might be due to defect in their applications. "Dear Candidate, if your result is withheld because of defect in your application, please send the relevant documents to gate@iitk.ac.in. Once your application is complete, your result will be released by the GATE office.  Please refer to the FAQ section," he tweeted.

Suban Kumar Mishra secured an all India rank (AIR) 1 in the GATE 2023, the results of which were declared on Thursday. He quit his well-paid corporate job at Ola Cabs in 2020 to prepare for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. Mishra cleared the exam as a safe option as his ultimate goal is to qualify Engineering Services Exam. He appeared in GATE 2020 and secured 2300 rank and in 2022 improved his rank to 801. This year, 5.17 lakh candidates appeared for the examination in more than 500 centres across the country with an overall attendance of about 77%. 

An Economics (Hons) final year student at DCAC College, Delhi University, Dhruv Gupta Thursday secured the all-India rank (AIR) 5 in GATE 2023 (Economics) with a score of 78.67 out of 100. However, this exam was simply a praqctice for him. “I appeared in GATE just for practice. IIT Kanpur has announced the toppers of GATE 2023

GATE 2023 was conducted in twenty-nine subject areas with the choice of selecting two papers in some subjects. From the 5.17 lakh that appeared, around 1 lakh candidates have qualified the GATE 2023 examination, making it about 18% as GATE 2023 qualified.

Out of the 29 papers, 12 papers registered more than 20% qualified candidates. Among those, the Metallurgical Engineering paper records about 25% qualified candidates making it the highest qualified percentage for GATE this year.

About 6.70 lakh candidates registered for GATE this time for 29 papers, in total. Out of these, 5.17 lakh candidates appeared for the examination in more than 500 centres across the country with an overall attendance of about 77%. 

While there is no age limit to apply for GATE, candidates should have been in their third or higher year of their undergraduate degree programme or completed any government approved degree programme in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce or arts.

The score card for GATE 2023 will be available for download from March 21. The score is valid for three years from the date of annoncement of results.

GATE 2023 score is valid for three years from the date of announcement of results. The GATE score is considered for admission MTech/ME programmes as well as PSUs for hiring.

Separate scores and ranks will be provided for the candidates based on the Part B section in GG paper.
For this, separate cut-off marks will be obtained as per the common procedure but by considering the following sections of GG paper:

— For Geology (GL) candidates: GA Section + Part A: Common Section + Part B (Section -1): Geology
— For Geophysics (GP) candidates: GA Section + Part A: Common Section + Part B (Section-2): Geophysics

Not just the result day, but the last day of the examination had also seen some technical glitches at a few GATE 2023 exam cenrtres. “There are a lot of security checks in place for this exam. Due to that, the central server gives an approval to all other centres to download the exam paper. On Sunday, in the second paper, that approval/nod didn’t come in on time. Even though manually it was all clear from the security point of view, the central server’s nod was pending. This caused a delay of 1.5 hours,” a source told indianexpress.com on condition of anonymity.

The official login window of the GATE 2023 website is showing a 'time out' error, due to which candidates are not able to login and check their score.

GATE 2021 recorded an overall 78 per cent attendance. A total of 38 students secured rank 1 in GATE paper wise. The cut-off marks varied between 26-36.

The GATE 2023 exam was conducted for a duration of 3 hours. Candidates had a total 65 questions- 10 questions based on General Aptitude and 55 questions based on the subject they were appearing for.There are three types of questions- multiple choice, multiple select and numerical answer.

The first GATE exam was held on Febraury 26, 1983. As per the first GATE information brochure, the exam was essential to secure admission to postgraduate engineering courses to the six institutes (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IISc Bangalore). Back then there were only 3 semesters for a duration of 18 months.

The average preparation time for the GATE exam is six months. According to the report, nearly 8 lakh to 1 million candidates apply for the exam, but an average of 16 to 18 per cent of them qualify for the test.
